Vet-Backed Methodology

The calculator uses the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula established by veterinary nutritionists, multiplied by your dog's specific activity factor. Results are cross-referenced with AAFCO guidelines and manufacturer data.

Formulas follow major veterinary organizations:

  • AAFCO: Association of American Feed Control Officials.
  • NRC: National Research Council feeding guidelines.
  • RER: Standard Resting Energy Requirement equations.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dog Food Costs

How much does dog food cost per month?

Dog food costs vary widely by breed size, food quality, and brand. Small breeds cost $20-45/month, medium breeds $40-75/month, large breeds $65-110/month, and giant breeds $100-160/month. Use our dog food cost calculator above for a personalized estimate. This uses your dog's breed, weight, and brand choice.

How does the dog food calculator work?

Our dog feeding calculator uses the veterinary-standard Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula: 70 ร— (body weight in kg)^0.75. It then multiplies by activity level (sedentary 1.2x, moderate 1.5x, active 1.7x, working 2.5x) and life stage (puppy 1.6x, adult 1.0x, senior 0.9x). Finally, it divides by the brand's caloric density to give you accurate daily portions, daily cost, monthly cost, and yearly cost estimates.

What is the best budget dog food brand?

For healthy adult dogs, Iams ProActive Health ($7.20/kg, $45/month for 70lb dog) offers the best value. Purina Pro Plan ($10.90/kg, $68/month) provides excellent research-backed nutrition at a mid-tier price. Avoid the cheapest generic brands long-term: vet bills will cost more than the food savings. Read our dog food brand reviews for detailed comparisons.

How much should I feed my dog per day?

Daily portions depend on weight, activity, and caloric density. Small dogs need ยฝ to 1ยฝ cups, and medium dogs need 1ยฝ to 2ยฝ cups. Large dogs need 2ยฝ to 4ยฝ cups, and giant breeds need 4ยฝ to 8 cups. Our calculator gives exact amounts.

How can I reduce my dog food costs without sacrificing quality?

Buy larger bags to save 28-44%. Use Subscribe & Save programs to save another 5-10%. Measure portions with a kitchen scale, stick to mid-tier brands, and avoid overfeeding. See our guide to saving on dog food for detailed strategies.
